leader: cheryl Vidales

"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be." Psalm 139:13-16 (ESV)

The vision of this ministry is to identify and break down barriers that keep individuals with disabilities and their families from being able to fully participate in the life of the church. It is our prayer that everyone in our church would understand that the Body of Christ includes those who don't talk, walk, think, feel, see, or hear the way other parts do.

Respite Events

Twice a year we host Respite Care events for families affected by disability.  Come and work alongside us as we help care for children and teens with disabilities and give their parents some time to "BREATHE". There are opportunities for volunteers to help with set up and clean up, crafts, games, snacks, music, and to serve as a "buddy" to a

child or teen with a disability. `The next respite is scheduled for Saturday, March 7, 2020.

Sunday Morning Buddies

We want to always be ready to welcome any family affected by disability. There are opportunities for individuals who are willing to step-up and be a buddy to a child or teen who needs support during the worship service or in children's/youth classes, so that their parents/caregivers can take a break and fully enjoy a Sunday morning small

group and/or the worship celebration.

Adult "Ability" Class

This class for adults with cognitive or learning challenges meets at the same time and on the same calendar as our Growth Courses. It provides an opportunity for Bible study, discipleship, and fellowship at a slower pace and with plenty of time for discussion of individual questions and needs. All are welcome! For more information please contact Cheryl Vidales at breathe@firstsf.com or call and leave a message at the church office: 415-863-3382.

Training and Networking

We partner with Joni and Friends Bay Area for support and training and are helping to launch a network of churches in San Francisco committed to growing in the area of disability ministry. Visit the Joni and Friends website for lists of resources, information about international ministries, Joni's blog and more.

If you have a family member with a disability and want to find out about upcoming respite events, or if you need support for a Sunday morning or other church event, OR if you are interested in volunteering, contact Cheryl Vidales
